Microphone Selection

For high quality recording, don't fall into the trap of thinking that microphones are all purpose - they are not. Amateurs will use whatever mic happens to be at hand, point it in the general direction of where they think the sound is coming from, and hope for the best. Microphone choice and placement is a skill that has to be learnt.

 Dynamic Mics
Dynamic mics are commonly used to record guitar amplifiers, drums, as well as for vocals in a live environment.

Electret (Condenser) Mics
Electret or Condenser microphones require amplification within the microphone, which is achieved by an on board battery, or external (phantom) power.  They are commonly used to record vocals and acoustic instruments.

Shotgun Mics
Shotgun mics are designed to be used where it is impossible to physically place a microphone near the subject being recorded.  For example, they could be used to capture the roar of a lion from a distance.

Boundary (PZM) Mics
A mini condenser mic, usually omni-directional
that is mounted on a flat metal plate.  This mic eliminates most of the reflected sound to produce a fairly clean sound.  They are commonly used to record pianos, and theatrical performances.

Lavalier (Tie-clip) Mics
As the name suggests, these microphones are designed to be worn by presenters on their tie or lapel.  This is the type of mic worn by news readers and TV presenters.

Radio (Wireless) Mics
Wireless mics are available for a variety of purposes, and are used where it is preferable or impossible to use a cabled mic.  For example, in some circumstances a cable might present a tripping hazard so a radio mic would be prefereable.  Likewise, if you need to record a presenter from hundreds of feet away, it would not be practical to use a cabled mic.
