Boom Poles
by Andrew Lock
The boom pole is a very useful
tool in video and film production. A directional mic is mounted on the far
end of the pole, and the other end is held by an operator, so that the mic is
positioned just out of camera frame. The mic cable is wrapped around the boom
arm.
The advantage with using a boom pole is that the actors or talent can move
around freely without worrying about tripping over a cord, switching their mics
on, etc.
The aim of the boom pole operator is to get the mic as close as possible to the
subject without it appearing in the frame, and while maintaining a consistent
distance so as not to cause the volume levels to change dramatically. It's
also important not to cast a shadow on the talent or the set.
